(This is a message I received from my friend JJ copied and pasted from facebook)
ReplyDelete"So, the piece of jewellery is a ring, filigree silver. It is from Malta, and apparently is a style unique to the area (someone Maltese I met knew it was from Malta immediately, so I guess this is true).
My parents got it for me on a family holiday to malta when I was 14. It is not worth much; its value is personal rather than economic. As well as being a memento of the holiday, it was also the first piece of nice "adult" jewellery that I got, so I suppose I saw it as something of a rite of passage.
I wore it every day without fail until it wore through at the back, then continued to wear it until it became somewhat misshapen. Now I keep it in its box."
Hi Kirsten,
ReplyDeleteSorry I will answer your question; probably you will have more information for your Uni work.
Do you have a piece (or pieces) of jewellery that is special to you?
Yes, I do... not because they are expensive or a great design, because the people whom gave them to me are special.
What does it mean to you personally?
I like jewellery that looks simple, rare and delicate. I may not get all in one piece. I just look for something unique as probably everybody wants it too.
Where/Who is it from?
Some from my country, some from Accessorizes and some from different shops
What does it look like?
From my country, they are more artisanal, made of wood, seeds, full of different colours (very strong colours)
From Accessorizes, they are small pins, slim chain, mainly in silver.
The same from other shops,
What special memories or associations does it hold for you?
Mainly, they remember me the person who give it to me. And generally, they are special people in my life.
How often do you wear it?
Every day I wear jewellery, I change the jewellery depending of my outfit.
If you don't wear it every day, where do you keep it?
I keep my jewellery hanging in a special jewellery box
How does your jewellery make you feel when you wear it?
It makes me feel like I have and extra accessory for my outfit... like it is complementing my own fashion, LOL!!
Hope I help you with some information!

well the only piece I have that might interest you is the wooden bead necklace I wear. It is a simple string of wooden beads, each about 5mm in diameter. I wear them everyday, except in the shower. I got them for about £3 at Thainstone sunday mart from a little malaysian woman who told me they were "lucky" beads. I am not superstitious, however I have worn them virtually everyday in the last 8 years and feel somewhat 'naked' without them.
ReplyDeleteHope this is some use to you :)

My favourite piece of jewellery is my cross, a gold piece inscripted in Cyrilic, worn on a silver chain.
ReplyDeleteI got this cross on a visit to Samara, Russia.
Having visited Samara, home of my wife, Natalia Vladirmirovna, I have seen at first hand the great affection that Russian people have for jewellery, & in particular crosses, as Orthodox Christianity is the dominant religion in Russia.
One Saturday we visited Natalia's local church, where she sang for many years. On leaving the church I was looking through a great array of symbols, icons and crosses that were available to purchase. This particular cross stood out to me, most probably because of it's Celtic appearance, but also because it seemed to be indicative of the profound sense of sheer belief and affection within the place.
I wear my cross every day, and can't think of a time when I have ever taken it off, if indeed I ever have. It invokes something very comforting for me, memories of my time spent over the last decade in Russia, a shared bond with my extended family.
I have two pieces of jewellery that are important to me. One is a necklace, about finger thickness and maybe an inch long. It is a dark blue plate on a silver background with a checker pattern. (sorry im not very good at describing it!) My brother bought it for me just before i left for New Zealand (2007) and maybe you can understand the importance of Phil giving me a gift so spontaneously!! I wore it everyday for a couple of months but got into the habbit of not wearing it and i kept it in my washbag while I was backpacking, or in a pocket in my bag - somewhere easily accessible. I occasionally wear it now if it goes with an outfit or for another reason which i will touch on after i tell you about a second piece.
ReplyDeleteFor my 21st, my grandparents bought me a ring. (I say bought; mum and I went shopping with their money and then they gave it to me after my birthday) Its a Sheila Fleet, i think its called "waves" if you want to look it up. I wear it every day on my left hand.
Both pieces make me feel like i am close to my family and are very important to me.

Do you have a piece (or pieces) of jewellery that is special to you? I have a signet ring that i got from my great great auntie when she died.
ReplyDeleteWhat does it mean to you personally? it means alot to me as it belonged to her. and it reminds me of times that we used to go round and see her when we were young
Where/Who is it from? My auntie
What does it look like? it is really plain its gold and quite squared off. it has been left blank with no initials on it. and has a ridge all around the rim
What special memories or associations does it hold for you? of playing at my aunties and of her
How often do you wear it? i can no longer wear it as it does not fit me anymore
If you don't wear it every day, where do you keep it? my mirrored jewellery i got from a friend for my 18th
How does your jewellery make you feel when you wear it? as my auntie was a small lady i can know longer where it but when i did. it made me feel special that i had got it and that i still had a piece of her to remember her by.
I have a ring that my grandmother gave me. It is special to me as it was a gift to her from my Grandad. When he bought it, it was already old.
ReplyDeleteIt is made of gold and has a piece faceted red glass set in the middle. On either side of the glass is an engraved heart with handles that come off each to hold the setting, which is an an enclosed setting.
This ring is special to me as it meant alot to my Grandparents. When they are not around, I will have this ring to remind me of them, and of their love to eachother. The fact that it was not new when it was bought makes it even more appealing to me and I am very interested in old, sentimental jewellery.
I wear it everyday...I never take it off.
I also have a gold bracelet that was given to me for my 16th birthday from my other Grandmother. It is a plain gold band with a Rennie MacIntosh rectangular section on the top. This section has the little hinge-part for it to close. I have never ever worn this bracelet in the 5 years I have had at, due to fear of losing it. As a result of keeping it in the box for so long, sitting round the cardboard rest - the catch has broken :( so I cant wear it even if I wanted to, until I fix it.
Hope this helps, Kelly :) x
Hi Kirsten, i have a lot of special jewellery but i have a gold bracelet that i wear everyday and have done since my 18th birthday. It was from mum and dad. Its quite difficult to describe, its like <> that kind of shape linked together.
ReplyDeleteI had to take it off when i was in hospital having Lewis and i also feel 'naked' without it so as soon as i got the chance i put it back on again!Thats the longest it had ever been off in 8 years.
My charm bracelet.
ReplyDeleteI got a link bracelet with one charm on it for my 13th birthday. It only cost around £20 to begin with but since then almost seven years have past and it has ironically become my most expensive piece of jewellery.
Every birthday I get a new charm as a gift from my mum. And whenever I go abroad or on a trip I always make the effort to buy a new charm to add to the collection. (Hence Disney characters from my many family holiday destination - Florida).
I don't wear it very often. I love wearing as it always get compliments and people ask about the history of it. But I actually also hate wearing it as it is so valuable to me (emotionally and financially). I would be devastated to lose it.
I keep it in the plain boring drawstring bag i got it in but mainly for commemorative sake. The bag is almost too small with all the new charms which have been added. That wee bag sits in the drawer right next to my bed.
I love because it will always remind me of my relationship with my mum as she helps me build up my bracelet too.
The charms and their meaning/relation:
Cat - My pet
Spider and web - My fear
Dragon - My imagination
Handcuffs - If I hadn't gone to art school I would have been in forensics/law enforcement
Directors chair - My love of film
Thumper - Disney Florida trip
Sea Shells - Holiday to Miami beach
4 leaf clover - Luck (obviously)
Gingerbread man - My sweet tooth
Crown - Disney trip
Musical Instruments - All my close friends are musical... I am not!
Goat - My star sign Capricorn
Hedgehog - Favourite childhood book "The Hodgeheg"
Giraffe - My mum grew up in Africa
Dumbo - Disney trip
Magic Kingdom Castle - Disney trip
Thats even the correct order in which I got them in.
I have a claddagh(I hope thats the spelling) ring which I got from my partner on my 20th birthday, we hadnt been together for that long but it felt right and so the ring was very symbolic
ReplyDeleteIts a yellow gold ring with diamonte stones round the heart then the heart itself is a green stone, for my birthday in may, its not really worth a huge amount monetarily but means a lot sentimenly
I wear it every day and wear it with the hearts top towards my fingertip, unsure if this is the correct way as have been told conflicting information
I also have a ring my mum gave me from my granny who passed away when I was small, its a plain gold band with a small black stone to the right of the centre I have no idea what its worth but would never sell it, hopefully it will fit Katelyn when shes older. I never take it off either, I took them off when going in to hospital to have Katelyn and felt so wierd not having them on.
Hope thats the information you need
